Have you ever seen a garage door trolley carriage? The photo below is a great way to see what an old and worn trolley carriage looks like, compared to a new one!
The parts in the picture below are from a Genie garage door opener. If you start hearing a loud grinding noise when your garage door opens and closes, you probably have a broken or worn out trolley carriage, and it needs to be replaced. Another sign of a worn carriage is if your garage door is having a hard time opening and closing.
The customer repair we did on this trolley carriage had a spring replacement around a year ago. There was normal wear and tear on the springs and they called another company to replace them. Unfortunately for our customer, the installer put in springs that were too small for their garage door.
Because the springs were too small for the door, it made the door heavy and caused more wear on the carriage than normal. It took less than a year for the part to wear out completely.
The video below gives you an idea of what the grinding sound this customer heard, sounds like. Towards the end of the video, you’ll see the “after” of the repair. No more grinding, and a smooth opening and closing!
This repair was pretty straightforward. We replaced the trolley carriage part, as shown above. It’s a quick fix, and not very costly. The repair took less than an hour.
And since the previous installer installed small springs, we removed those and installed the correct size. As always with a spring installation, we adjusted the tension of the springs as well. The adjustment is necessary to carry the weight of the door properly.
Here’s another look at another trolley repair and lubrication we performed earlier this month. You can really hear the grinding noise in this one!
